The bigger they come, the harder they fall ... in love.

Cambridge academic Larry Morton takes one, alcohol-glazed look at the huge, tattooed man looming in a dark alley, and assumes he’s done for. Moments later he finds himself disarmed -- literally and figuratively. Next morning, he can’t rest until he’s apologised to the man who turned out to be more gentle than giant.

Larry’s intrigued to find there’s more to Al Fletcher than meets the eye; he possesses a natural artistic talent that shines through untutored technique. Unfortunately, no one else seems to see the sensitive soul beneath Al’s imposing, scarred, undeniably sexy exterior. Least of all Larry’s class-conscious family, who would like nothing better than to split up this mismatched pair.

It’s deliciously physical, but also much more -- which makes Larry’s next task so daunting. Not just convincing his colleagues, friends, and family that their relationship is more than skin deep. It’s convincing Al.

:) My goodness, this is a book different from any I've ever read !! Amazing, riveting and unique. Al is a big, burly, tattooed man who works with "pole boats" for tourists, because it's safer than being a bouncer, where he got his facial scar. This is written from his mind's view, and he is a savant, a bit slow with some things, and an insanely talented artist. He and Professor Larry meet in an alley and Larry freezes up, afraid of the big guy, because Larry is slim, small, and knows Al could snap him in half. Their unlikely relationship begins there, as big Al takes care of Larry, getting him home safely. This is a beautifully told tale of a bright professor who falls for a rough Brit, a common man with a heart of gold. Larry sees the real man and likes being with him. Al feels the same way. Larry arranges a showing of Al's art, they have unusual families to deal with, and I loved the thoughts and explanations going through Al's mind as we move along.
So brilliantly written, such an amazing tale. WOW !! ENJOY !!!

Muscling Through JL Merrow 9781544634487 Books Reviews

Sometimes, it's someone unexpected, an unexpected blessing, who helps us to realize our full potential, no matter how quiet that potential may be.
This is Al for Larry and Larry for Al.

Al literally shines a light on Larry's heart, making it impossible for Larry to do anything but fall for Al, all of Al. He breaks down what appear to be the last barriers between Larry and his own contented happiness.

Larry shines a light on what even Al's Mum doesn't 100% recognize Al is beautiful. Gorgeous. This time, it's the outside that deserves fresh recognition. Al's insides shine unfailingly bright already.

Al may not understand all of the veiled, or not so veiled, references that some people let flutter and fall around them. He doesn't need to. Sometimes I wish I didn't need to understand. That junk is exhausting. What Al does understand is how those same people are feeling. If he knows them well, he's connected and reaches right in, showing them their own heart and that he wants to protect it. That he can and will protect it.

Maybe even more importantly, he knows how he feels and is honest about that. I think that's a big reason as to why Larry falls so deeply for Al and is adamant in his feelings for him. Even when Larry fails to understand (yep, it's Larry who fails to see the truth for awhile, not Al), he does not hesitate in telling his family what Al means to him. This only happens when Larry allows himself to truly acknowledge Al's complete honesty, that it doesn't change as circumstances change.

Is there repetition in the number of ways we're shown why and how Al deals with the world and all of the beautifully odd people in it? Yes. On the flip side, his voice is incredibly and consistently written. You'll know Al as well as he knows himself. How often does that happen? Not often. And it's how Al lives his life, as well. He's an open book with depth, tenderness, trust and love.

Simple does not equal stupid. Simple does not mean unaware.
Simple is one way some people make their way in the world, letting us see them, and they letting us see ourselves.
I generally tend toward long rambling, somewhat rant-like reviews. But I can't do that for Muscling Through. I just don't think I can do it justice. I loved it. I loved Alan. I did. Everyone does. But I loved Larry too. I don't think Larry gets enough credit for being open enough to look past Alan's rough exterior to see the yummy, gooey-soft centre. And as a couple they are a marvellous example of opposites attracting and working oh so well together.

But beyond having two marvellous main characters, the book is chocked full of amazingly transparent 'Awww' moments. You see, Alan's simplicity (and lets face it he's as dumb as a box of rocks) grants him the right to utterances that would, in the mouths of more intellectually capable individuals, ring false and possibly even Machiavellian. But there is no guile in Alan. You feel it. You trust it and all those wretched sappy-sweet gag reflexes relax as unneeded.

But there is also A LOT of humour. Insults and ill intentions bounce off Alan like Teflon. He's untouchable in his savant-like serenity. He often lets things go as unimportant, but just as often he lets them go as not understood or misunderstood. More than once I had to set the down until my laughing fit passed. There are just too many examples of stupid-happy resulting in priceless humour. Only made even better by the fact that he's usually completely oblivious to it.

The writing is almost painfully straightforward, as it should be when narrated by someone as literal and uncomplicated as Alan. And it's short, but the right length for its story. So, while I want, want, want more, I admit the author knew better than to give it to us.

This is one of those books I'll mourn the end of. I wish I was the sort who read books more than once. This would be a re-read. Highly recommened.

(I was, however, annoyed when the book ended at 86%. I expected there to be more book to the book, if you know what I mean.)
This story is such a quiet thing. Many readers won't connect with it. (Not their fault. That's true of all stories.)

Despite the way the blurb reads, Al is our point of view character, not Larry. Al's not smart and he knows it, but what snares Larry's interest is his sweetness, and the unusual ways Al thinks about the world. As a reader, you have to pay attention or one of his thoughts will slip past you. One of them brought tears to my eyes.

I admire the skill it took to write this in such a kind, funny and insightful way.
